Information Design is a specialized field of Visual Communication - and as such it has never been mainstream.
Rather, it was always characterized by an analytical approach and a functional focus - methodical, experimental, applied and always a bit geeky.
That has changed significantly since the early 1990s. On the one hand through the development of a ubiquitous digitalized information society and on the other hand through the ever increasing challenges of our living conditions, which above all require new creative thinkingt hat is able to involve people. Climate, globalization, pandemics, equal opportunities - just a few keywords are enough to illustrate the great need and the immense importance of good information design. Presenting complex content in an understandable way, creating clarity through graphic means, enabling decisions through comprehensibility - these are concerns that focus on the needs and wishes of the users. For interested designers, this development offers substantial opportunities and tasks - conceptually, aesthetically, professionally and, last but not least, meaningful.
